General Discussion

I was just wondering if you guys will ever plan to make EC to where it can give you step-by-step directions? I was also wondering why some of the roads in EC cut out for about a block...i know the street is there...but it doesn't show it.

Thank you,

Directions coming

Hi Joe --

We will soon be releasing a version of Earthcomber which supports turn by turn directions. This will only be available to devices that have an internet connection (WiFi or smart phones), since the directions will be computed and delivered by our server.

As for the display issue you mention, that is a known bug. If you drag around the view you are looking at you can probably make the segment appear and disappear. It's primarily a problem at the zoomed in views, but can appear anywhere. I'll try to post back here when it has been resolved.

Thank you for the feedback.

Kind regards,

Chris Dunworth

Thank you!

I just wanted to say thanks, you answered my question very quickly!

I have another though, you said that only Phones and PDAs with a internet connection would be able to do turn by turn directions. So I was wondering if you guys at EC will ever make maps Pre-loaded with names and distances and have the program, (without internet connection) be able to process the directions. I know this would take up alot of memory on my PDA, but thats the reason i bought it, for a local turn-by-turn map, and a universal remote. So even if the program ends up filling up all of my memory, it would be worth it for this feature!

Thank you,
Joe Prior

ps. thank for the quick fix on the bug you mentioned, i was always getting lost or confused because i thought the road I am on is going to be a dead-end!

Re: Thank you!

Hi Joe --

Thanks again for your comments. We certainly won't rule out the possibility of building some on-device routing in the future. But for a variety of reasons we chose the over-the-airwaves approach for the coming release: faster computation (the server does it), ability to generate ANY route (because you're not limited to just the maps currently loaded on your device), ability to update the routing capabilities without requiring users to download/install new maps and software, etc. And as mobile internet access becomes more universal and people migrate towards internet capable devices, the connectivity requirement becomes less of an issue.

You were probably hoping for a different answer. ;-) Please let me know if there is any other way I can assist you.

Thanks!

I wanted to say thanks again, i don't have an internet-capable pda or phone now, but from what you just said i will try to start buying more technology with built in internet. You did answer all of my questions though, and fast, if there is any way i could recommend you or do anything in return, e-mail me; mojojojo1311@yahoo.com.

If you guys ever do decide to make a turn by turn map offline, just e-mail me!

Thank You For Your Help,
Joe Prior

What about

Creating Step by step directions on the website and then simply synchronizing them to the device?
