» Works with a Mac?
General Discussion

I have q question about the statement "Earthcomber most certainly works with Mac and Linus..."

Does that just mean tha the maps can be downloaded to a Mac to import into a Palm, or can the maps be used on a Mac?

The reason I ask is I have an iBook and a TN-206 Bluetooth GPS receiver. Can the maps be displayed on the iBook without importing them to a Palm?

Sorry, but we don't have map-viewing software which runs natively on the Mac. The only map viewers we offer are our Palm handheld software, plus the online map engine integrated into Earthcomber Community.

When we indicate that we have Mac support, what we mean is that we support Palm users who synchronize with a Macintosh. Specifically, we have a Manual Download page which packages up your selected maps and location data into a convenient zip archive for download. You can then unpack this on your Mac or Linux machine and synchronize to your Palm using the Palm Installer (Mac) or jPilot (Linux).

I hope this clears up any confusion.

RE: Works with a Mac!

Hi, actually, if you get your hands on POSE (Palm OS Emulator) it probably will work on your Mac. haven't tried on mine yet, but everything else i ever tried just worked in the emulator. get it at http://www.palmos.com/dev/tools/emulator/

WORKS WITH A MAC??? SHOW ME THE MONEY!!!

OK...I have EARTHCOMBER installed on my TREO 650.

I installed the EARTHCOMBER UPDATER onto my MAC (OS X).

I went to the EARTHCOMBER WEBSITE to select the LOS ANGELES MAP.

I configured the UPDATER to send the file to my SD CARD N THE TREO.

I had EARTHCOMBER UPDATER download the LOS ANGELES map I selected.

I DID THIS 5 TIMES. OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

So, tell me.

When the UPDATER downloads the map...WHERE ON GOD'S GREEN EARTH DOES IT SEND IT?????????????????????????????????????

Would love to know.

Check "Syncing With Device"

What's Going On? The Earthcomber Updater for Mac OS X searches for the Palm directory in your Documents folder. This directory is typically called Palm Users inside the Palm Users directory is usually one or more directories representing the devices that sync with your computer. The Earthcomber Updater lists these directories in the Syncing With Device field of the Login Info screen. However, it also incorrectly includes a few extra directories, like Backups. You need to make sure the correct device is chosen on the Login Info screen in the Syncing With Device drop down.

Where are the files? The Earthcomber files are first downloaded to a temp directory on you computer which is typically located here: HardDrive:\tmp
Once downloaded, the files are copied to the Documents/Palm Users/devicename directory inside of you home directory. Where devicename is the name you've given your device.

Finally, if all else fails you can follow the directions in this post to tell the Earthcomber Updater where the files get placed on your computer, then install them manually to your device.

I hope this helps.

Sincerely,
Randy Wilson

Treo 650 syncs OK with OS 10.3.9

Played around with this intriguing software last night. The sync procedure works well with my Mac although the interface is rather un-Mac-like. Initial barriers are storage on the Treo and the quality of maps and data.

EC hardly runs at all with the data on the SD card. Moving the data to the Treo helps but is somewhat impractical for more than one or two counties, both because of storage constraints and the clumsy process of deleting and adding counties. I would likely use EC most when traveling but to look up something I would have to figure out what county I was in, move data around, and finally look for spots. This was the same problem Mapopolis had until they figured out a way to run it seamlessly from the SD card.

When I searched for spots in my local area the maps seemed rather old and not detailed enough for navigation. I could see a location on the map but getting there would be a challenge for a visitor without a map that showed expressway ramps, one-way streets and other road features. On top of that the data shows only a tiny fraction of the actual spots. For example, it showed one cafe in the vicinity of my house when there are actually a half-dozen that are closer.

So, what is the source of the maps and data? How often are they updated? Thanks.
