» Verizon XV6700 GPS
Windows Mobile Client

Does anyone know what the internal GPS Baud Rate and COM Port settings are for the Verizon XV6700? The device says it has been tested and recommended with Earthcomber software, but it doesn't say if the GPS has been tested or what the settings should be. I did enable the satellite icon and I do get a yellow icon, which tells me that it found the GPS device, but couldn't lock on to a signal (More satellite/GPS info would be nice). I think this should work because the GPS was advertised when I bought this and the identical unit provided by Cingular (8125) has an internal GPS that works with Tom Tom software.

Verizon XV6700 GPS

Hi, BGaudreault

how'd you manage to get the yellow GPS icon? I've been trying to do that for a while on my verizon xv6700. When i press gps icon, it turns red and starts searching for GPS device from com port 3 to 7 and times out. This is my GPS settings (settings->GPS)
GPS program port : com3
GPS Hardware Port :com4; BR:4800
Access : manage automatically checked.

could you please post your settings or tell me how did your earthcomber detect the internal gps?

been reading forums and they all have different opinion. some say the internal gps can be used while others say it;s only for E911 (uses cell towers to locate position so not a true gps)

if anyone has any lead on this please post it.

Thanks
zlich

When I do a GPS status search

When I do a GPS status search, my satellite icon turns red, but because my device auto blanks the screen after 2min, the satellite icon turns yellow after I turn on the screen again. If I allow the GPS status search to continue by keeping the screen on, then the icon stays red and the search just loops.

I only have COM Port (1), Baud Rate (4800), and Comb Frequency (3min) settings on my Earthcomber GPS config page. I don't understand where you got a GPS program port or hardware port and why they're different in the first place??? I don't have an access option either. Maybe you're running an older version of the software? I have Earthcomber v2.2.4 (Home page > Options > Welcome).

An answer to this question from Earthcomber would be VERY nice and help explain this internal GPS issue on these units. Does anyone know any techs inside Verizon or HTC? Verizon customer support doesn't seem to know anything about GPS except for E911, even though the unit has the ability to enable GPS for location, not just E911/911 (Wireless Manager > Settings > Phone Settings... > Services tab > Location Setting > Get Settings...). Someone put GPS as a feature on this unit in the store, so I hope it's not false advertising. Triangulation by cell tower is NOT GPS, as you said. There's nothing GLOBAL about using a cell tower when there are none in the middle of an ocean. THAT'S false advertising. I don't mind that Earthcomber can't access this E911 information, but it would be nice for Earthcomber to tell us if their software can or cannot on the device compatibility page.

Doesn't Look Like The XV6700 Has GPS

All new phones have the E911 capability, but very few have GPS built in. Usually, they'll be listed as "Navigation Capable". However, in the Verizon store, GPS is not mentioned as a feature.

Earthcomber requires a GPS device that can provide standard NMEA sentences over the serial port. It doesn't appear as though the XV6700 has anything more than the E911 capabilities.

Sincerely,
Randy Wilson
Earthcomber Support
