Earthcomber Updater

I am running Windows XP. I have a Palm Z22. The updater program seems to install correctly. I have a map to download, but when I press the Update button, the scripts look like they have located the map but nothing downloads.

What is the problem?

Do You Get The Summary Screen

Russ,
When you click "Get Updates", the Updater checks for updates, then displays a "Summary Screen" of what it is about to do. Having only one map this should happen pretty quickly. Do you see the "Summary Screen"? Does the Updater take a long time to check for updates?

If you don't see the "Summary Screen", and it seems like the Updater is taking a long time to not show you it, then it's likely you're running into a firewall issue. The Updater logs into the Earthcomber server using a secure connection, but afterwards it communicates over a normal unencrypted connection. When the "Summary Screen" never shows its almost always caused by the secure login being allowed by the firewall, but the rest is blocked.

Try configuring your firewall to allow the Updater through on both secure and normal web channels, HTTPS and HTTP.

this seems to be the same pro

this seems to be the same problem I'm running into...it never updates past 0%. Exactly how would I reconfigure my firewall? Thanks!

We Can't Really Answer That Completely

Unfortunately, there are just too many different kinds of firewalls for us to answer this adequately. However, the software versions typically have a "learning mode" that you can put them in where they will either allow everything for a certain duration and remember those programs, OR they'll prompt you if they should allow a program and you just need to say "Always Allow" for the Earthcomber Updater.

I hope this at least gets you started in the right direction.

Still nothing

I figured out how to disable the firewall (Yes, I did reactivate it later!), and with ther firewall disabled, I still don't get updates on my maps past 0%. I also have earthcomber as a program to always allow? Any additional ideas for me? thanks!

Use File Selection

Because of your firewall issues, I believe that the Updater "feels" as though it has already downloaded your files. It keeps track of what it has downloaded in a text file on your computer. Whenever you click "Get Updates", it checks that file, compares it to whats on the server and says, "no updates necessary".

Here's what you do. Click "Get Updates", when the "Summary Screen" appears (and I hope it is appearing now), click the "File Selection" button in the lower-right corner. Now, choose a destination for your maps and location data that is NOT "Ignore". Use the "All" buttons to make it quicker. Also, do this for looklists, the application, and any guides you may have. Now, click "OK". Hopefully, now, you'll get those files.

Maybe I have additional issue

Maybe I have additional issues....I have no Summary Screen!

same thing

i have win xp and palm z22 as well and its doing the exact same thing, it also never installed the earthcomber application onto my palm either.

why bother using earthcomber, when support stinks

I have win xp and palm tungsten e as well and its doing the exact same thing, it also never installed the earthcomber application onto my palm either

Syncing With "Which" Device

Most often, if the Earthcomber Updater displays the Summary Screen and you can click "OK" and the Updater downloads files, then the wrong device is chosen in the "Syncing with device" drop down on the Login Info screen of the Updater. Make sure that the name in that drop down matches exactly the name that appears in the upper-right corner of your device's screen when you tap the HotSync applet on your device. If they do not match, then the Updater is putting Earthcomber files into the install queue of a different device.

If you don't get the Summary Screen, then the Earthcomber Updater is getting blocked by a firewall in a strange way. In the directory in which the Earthcomber Updater is installed, there should be an "ERRORS.LOG" file. Post that here, or e-mail that to support@earthcomber.com so we can take a look at it.
