The lens was originally built for the Mississippi U., but the Civil War ended that contract. The University of Chicago (not the current one, but located in the same place) under the ownership of the <em>The Chicago Astronomical Society</em>, brought it to Chicago. In 1886 it was moved to the current Dearborn Observatory on NU's campus.]]></description>

Those poor unfortunate fans with good seats don't get to experience this panorama of sights.

		<description><![CDATA[<em>The Rock</em> is hard to explain to outsiders. It was brought from Wisconsin in 1902 to become a lovely fountain between University and Harris Halls.  It became the victim of sorority and fraternity pranks in the 1940s. They'd sneak out in the middle of the night and paint it white. Those crazy kids! Since vandalism of the rock continued and punishment proved futile, a tradition was born.

Well, Frances Willard was the founder of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union, a prohibitionist organization which also concerned itself with women’s suffrage, prison reform, and prostitution abolition. Annually, Willard hosts a party the celebrates (or mocks) the prohibitionist thing.

Also, note the lush foliage on and around the building in the photo. Don't expect to see that in January.]]></description>
