	<desc><![CDATA[ The World War II Memorial honors 16 million who served in the U.S. forces, 400,000 of whom died, and the millions of Americans who supported them on the home front. 

President Bill Clinton authorized the project in 1993. A jury chose architect Friedrich St. Florian's design out of 400.

Dedicated on Veterans Day, 2000, the site opened in 2004.
